Deadline has word that Timothee Chalamet in now in talks to play Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve‘s new Dune movie for Legendary Pictures.
Paul is essentially a space messiah and goes from royalty to the saviour of Arrakis, the planet also known as Dune.
The dessert like planet has no rainfall or water to speak of but the reason anyone would venture there is Spice. A substance known to give power and extended life along with the power source for space travel. Arrakis is the only source of the spice which makes it a vastly important chess piece in the galactic power struggle at the heart of the story.
Paul’s father is ordered by the Emperor, his father’s cousin to oversee the spice operation which is intended to become an act of aggression leading to all out war with the House Harkonnen, who have been allowed to assassinate The Duke [Paul’s father] by Emperor. Who sees the Duke Atreides as a potential threat to his rule of the galaxy if he becomes too powerful.
Star Wars took a lot from the original novel by Frank Herbert, so there could be a lot of people seeing familiar themes and plot details, but I assure you Dune did it first way before George Lucas even had the hint of making his movie. It’s basically like if Game of Thrones and Star Wars had a baby.
THR also seemingly supports our previous report that Legendary is aiming to begin filming early next year. Omega Underground posted that filming on Dune is expected to begin this February in Budapest.
Denis had plans to shoot two films but it remains to be seen if that is still the plan.
