During an interview with Empire Magazine, Tom Cruise revealed that Mission: Impossible – Fallout screenwriter/director Christopher McQuarrie will be involved with his next film Top Gun: Maverick.

Although, his role on the project wasn’t exactly made clear in Tom’s brief comment.

It’s not terribly surprising that he’d likely be asked to tinker with the script considering that Christopher is known as a script-doctor and his relationship with Cruise/Paramount Pictures. Having him potentially amp-up action scenes or sequences wouldn’t exactly hurt as Fallout became the most successful film in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

There were seemingly some production hiccups and they could have been caused by rewrites.

Maverick’s cast includes Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris.

The two have also previously worked together on Jack Reacher, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (only produced), Edge of Tomorrow, The Mummy, Valkyrie, and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. There is also an expectation he could return to direct Cruise in Mission: Impossible 7.

Paramount has set the release date for Top Gun: Maverick on June 26th, 2020.
