This is huge news in a time of huge announcements. Sony has decided to push ahead with their plans for a Venom movie and they have put some heavyweight talent both in front of and behind the camera.

It is being reported that Tom Hardy, who was last seen in the DC Comics universe playing the villain Bane in Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, has been cast as the titular Spider-Man villain Venom in a new movie from Sony’s rebooted Spider-Man franchise starting with Spider-Man: Homecoming. This film will be followed by movies featuring other Spider-Man supporting characters Silver Sable and Black Cat.

Hardy was nominated for an Academy Award last year for The Revenant and has received critical acclaim from moviegoers and genre fans for his turn in Mad Max: Fury Road. While plot details have not been released, it is confirmed that Tom Hardy will be playing Eddie Brock in the film. Sony is in final negotiations with Ruben Fleischer to direct the film based on the script from Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. Fleishcer’s biggest hit to date was the 2009 film Zombieland.

Venom is scheduled for release October 5, 2018.
