TOMB RAIDER Reboot Gets SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Writer

Feb 25, 2015

Deadline reports that screenwriter Evan Daugherty has signed-on to write the new Tomb Raider movie for MGM. The also report that Warner Bros. is partnering with MGM on the film as well. Daugherty might not be familiar to you but has landed high-profile gigs such as Snow White and The Huntsman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Divergent, and G.I. Joe 3.

The film is said to focus on a younger Lara Croft going on her first mission, similar to the more recent video games. It’s also been in development for years, so let’s see if it actually makes it to production this time.

I’m not too thrilled by Evan’s addition to the project but I’m sure with Warner Bros. now involved the director and casting might be on a higher level than what was going-on over at Universal.

Fingers crossed they don’t end-up hiring Megan Fox for the role.

Actresses such as Olivia Wilde and Jaimie Alexander have commented on potentially taking the mantle from Angelina Jolie.

Here’s what Jaimie told Movieline back in 2011 when asked about the reboot. Missing-out on the Wonder Woman role and not getting enough screentime in the Thor franchise, this might be the best project for her.

“I’ve obviously been hearing about a Tomb Raider reboot, which I think would be pretty awesome — Lara Croft. Anything that’s very physical. … I would love to pursue Lara Croft.”

“I’m not going to try and be Angelina Jolie. She’s her own woman, and she did a fantastic job as Lara Croft. If that opportunity arises for me, then I would put my own spin on Lara Croft. There’s no way I would try and copy what she did. I think that’s a huge mistake with actors and actresses who are taking on a role that was previously done by someone else.”

Wilde also mentioned to MTV about her long-time-rumored involvement with the project.

“As far as I know right now, I’m not playing Lara Croft. No…..That would be so awesome. I love Lara Croft,” she said. “That’s really cool that people think I should play her. That’s nice of them.”

I personally think the ship has sailed for Olivia’s action star potential after bombs like Cowboys And Aliens and Tron Legacy. I’ve also seen way too many bad films with her in it to say I’d be overly enthused about her taking the role.

Hiring an actual British actress hasn’t really been brought-up but I’d love to see someone like Games of Thrones and Hunger GamesNatalie Dormer considered for the part. She’s also a fan-favorite to take the Carol Danvers role in Captain Marvel as well.

While I’ve played the games in the past I can’t say I was a massive fan of the films that starred Angelina Jolie, I’m kind of hoping they do end-up landing a strong actress and make a run at great adventure film. We know that studios haven’t put the best effort into movies based on video games but Tomb Raider along with Uncharted and others do have strong potential.

What do you think about a new Tomb Raider movie franchise, who do you want to play Lara Croft?
