For the month of October, we are highlighting the top villains in gaming. Andrew, Jeff, and Jeremie have teamed up to take all those guys you love to hate, and rank them. We will reveal them to you in a countdown, starting with #31 and ending with #1 on Halloween. Check us out each day of the month to see where your favorite villains rank!
First Appearance: Super Mario Bros.
Most Notable Appearance: Super Mario 64
Today we feature the biggest and baddest Koopa of all time. Also known as King Koopa, this villain aspires to take control of Mushroom Kingdom. Kidnapping Princess Peach is his usual villainous act forcing his archenemy Mario to transform from a simple plumber to a koopa-stomping hero.
In the early days of 8-bit video games, Bowser didn’t bring much to the table as far as super abilities go. Yeah he breathed fire and shot hammers from his head, but Mario laughed at his feeble attempts to control Mushroom Kingdom. Even in his regular form Mario had the skills to outwit his enemy. What I consider to be the best Super Mario game on the NES, Bowser actually defeated himself. The only thing Mario had to do was dodge, watch, and laugh.
Bowser became increasingly difficult to defeat in future games. That being said, Mario still possessed the necessary skills to send this villain packing. Mario could jump over gigantic boulders, find that safe spot from falling flames, and still manage to knock out this fire-breathing dragon with Bowser’s wind up toys. One of the most satisfying victories over this baddie occurred several times in what I believe is the best Super Mario game of all time: Super Mario 64. In this game our hero had to get up close and personal. Running circles around his nemesis while fighting dizziness and dodging fire, Mario manages to grab that short tail and displays super human strength by tossing King Koopa into another zip code. I’m really hoping that future Bowser versus Mario battles keep on challenging me. Like I said earlier this month in another villain article this is one fight that will never get old.
This concludes our month-long Villains feature. What do you think? Did your favorite villain make the list? I hope that you enjoyed this month long feature as much as myself, Andrew, and Jeff have. Hopefully we can bring more unique content like this in the future. We appreciate our readers. Keep on gaming!
