#12: Donkey Kong
First Appearance: Donkey Kong
Most Notable Appearance: Donkey Kong (Game Boy)
Donkey Kong is an iconic video game character who happens to be villain. He is famous for bringing platforming video games to North America. Donkey Kong also introduces the classic damsel in distress video game trope. Because of how Mario, his owner, has treated him he decides to kidnap Mario’s girlfriend … and a villain is born. Supplied with never ending barrels and springs, DK attempts to disrupt Mario’s quest to rescue Pauline. Spoiler alert: the ape doesn’t accomplish his goal and eventually falls from a great height ungracefully landing on his head. Better get a CT scan or a MRI, because I’m sure he has a concussion.
In later games, this villain gets captured by Mario (DK2), gets kicked out of a greenhouse by a guy named Stanley (DK3), and finally decides to transform from the bad guy to a pretty cool ape who just wants to live in peace and enjoy a ton of bananas (Donkey Kong Country). I remember getting the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong back in 1994. It was a very fun game. Having added 96 levels, DK needed a lot of barrels to keep Mario from rescuing his girlfriend again. It was challenging but I will always remember where I was when I achieved victory. Before I go, here’s a fun fact that is gonna show my age: the original arcade game was released in July of 1981 making it 33 years old….. I was born in that same year & month. Do you have any special memories of this franchise? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments or on Twitter.
