For the month of October, we are highlighting the top villains in gaming. Andrew, Jeff, and Jeremie have teamed up to take all those guys you love to hate, and rank them. We will reveal them to you in a countdown, starting with #31 and ending with #1 on Halloween. Check us out each day of the month to see where your favorite villains rank!

#17: Shredder

First Appearance: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Most Notable Appearance: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time

Shredder, leader of the Foot Clan and a menace to the citizens of New York, made his debut in the video game world back in 1989. His most popular move was kidnapping April O’Neil, a news reporter that uncovers the existence of four teenage mutant turtles. When this happened, the meanest and greenest ninja turtles would leave the confines of their underground home, the New York City sewers……gross.  These turtles would seek out Shredder, defeat the Foot, and restore peace before vanishing like only ninjas can.

Shredder’s ongoing battle is really against Splinter, a mutated rat that trained Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello in the ways of ninjutsu. He tries to eliminate his opposition by sheer force and the ninja skills he learned from his master. Shredder meets his match whenever the mean green ninja turtle fighting machine comes to the party. Fueled by pizza, these ninjas always send this fearsome foe packing regardless of whether he was normal Shredder or Super Shredder. It certainly was a lot tougher to defeat this bad guy in the early NES games, especially in the very first TMNT game I played. I’m not even sure if I have ever beaten Shredder in that game. At the time, gamers didn’t have the ability to get tips and tricks from YouTube videos or the internet. We had to use the old method of trial and error.

It’s a bummer that I’ve never beaten the original Shredder. This isn’t keeping me awake at night but I really want to get the first TMNT game again and make an attempt or two. Have you beaten this villain? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter. Also if you have any great tips on how to defeat Shredder and where I can find a working affordable game please contact me. Later dudes and dudettes.
