Trouble in Paradise? Asa Butterfield Drops Out of ‘Spider-Man’ Talks

Jun 12, 2015

Is there trouble in paradise? After years of fans begging the comic book gods for Spider-Man to join the ever expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe their prayers were finally answered. After the infamous “Sony Hack” which lead the heads of Sony to join ranks with Marvel Studios to introduce a brand new Spider-Man set firmly in the MCU. Now casting is underway and Marvel Studios is clearly trying to get an underage actor singed to a massive multi-picture deal that would keep him in the universe for many years to come unlike 30 year old previous Spider-Men Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield. At the top of the supposed actors list who was in deep negotiations was Enders Game star Asa Butterfield. He was long rumored for the role but it has come to light that he has since left negotiations and the list is down to just three Tom Holland, Charlie Plummer, or Matthew Lintz. He did once discuss Spider-Man news on Reddit a month or two back which could have hurt his chances getting signed…

While on today’s episode of Meet the Movie Press journalist for The Wrap Jeff Snider broke this news about Buttfields departure. But he goes onto add that The Heart of the Sea actor Tom Holland‘s name keeps popping up in talks. Holland apparently has a lot of buzz surrounding his role in this years Heart of the Sea film based on Moby Dick. He is also at the ripe age of 19 which means their won’t be any restrictions on his working capacity legally speaking if they went with him instead of an underage actor. On the flip side Marvel Studios wanted Boardwalk Empire actor Charlie Plummer who is under the age of 18.

It’s entirely possible that Marvel and Sony agree to go with a complete unknown which always seems to happen in Marvel films. But for now we are down to a three-man race to the finish for the coveted role of Spider-Man. With all this trouble signing an actor how long will it be until its to late to have him appear in Captain America: Civil War? Since that film began filming in April…

Devin Faraci of Birth.Movies.Death has added to the original story that while the two companies may not actually be fighting but rather exercising much caution on who they cast as the third Peter Parker. The site goes onto say that yes Asa Butterfeild is indeed out but they add another name to the list and it’s The Golden Compass actor Charlie Rowe. But they also add that Tom Holland is still the favorite for the role. Ironically, Charlie Rowe actually played a young Andrew Garfield in the film Never Let Me Go.
