Warner Bros. Reportedly Courting ‘Get Out’s Jordan Peele To Direct ‘Akira’

Mar 30, 2017

A new report coming from TrackingBoard is suggesting that director Jordan Peele is currently being courted by Warner Bros. to tackle their Akira movie after his major critical and box office success with the horror film Get Out.

Warner Bros. has been enamored with Peele ever since Get Out opened to big business and sparked a cultural conversation. At one point, I thought the studio was going to ask him to direct The Flash. Who knows? They still could! But I’m told Akira is the WB project that Peele is engaging on, and the talks are apparently going very well.

Other recent names said to be in the mix included directors Daniel Espinosa (Life) and David Sanberg (Lights Out).

Warner Bros. had been embroiled in their own whitewashing controversy with their development of removing the Asian setting and characters with their western incarnation of the manga/anime. Who knows if Peele will take more of an authentic approach after the massive backlash from Ghost In The Shell’s live-action adaptation.
