Warner Bros. Wants Female Lead For ‘Logan’s Run’ Remake; Plus Concept Art From Kosinski Incarnation

Apr 8, 2015

Tracking Board is reporting that Warner Bros. is indeed still moving forward with their Logan’s Run remake of the 1976 film, even though they’ve been having a tough time keeping creative teams on the project. Their next incarnation will apparently focus on a young female lead possibly taking cues from the massively successful sci-fi franchise The Hunger Games. This feels like a great angle and hopefully the studio doesn’t back-off this idea. It’s looking like the studio is still on a search to find a new writer.

It’s 2274 and on the surface, it all seems to be an idyllic society. Living in a city within an enclosed dome, there is little or no work for humans to perform and inhabitants are free to pursue all of the pleasures of life. There is one catch however: your life is limited and when you reach 30, it is terminated in a quasi-religious ceremony known as Carousel. Some, known as runners, do try to escape their fate when the time comes and it’s the job of Sandmen to track them down and kill them. Logan is such a man and with several years before his own termination date, thinks nothing of the job he does. Soon after meeting a young woman, Jessica-6, he is ordered to become a runner himself and infiltrate a community outside the dome known as Sanctuary and to destroy it. Pursued by his friend Francis, also a Sandman, Logan and Jessica find their way to the outside. There they discover a beautiful, virtually uninhabited world. Logan realizes that he must return to the dome to tell them what he’s found and be set free.

I’d love to see Oscar nominee Emma Stone (Birdman, Zombieland, Aloha, Superbad, Gangster Squad) possibly take this role since I think she’d make a great action star if given the right role, not unlike Scarlett Johansson when she landed Black Widow in Iron Man 2. I believe there’s a badass in there just waiting for the right project. Emma might be a studio darling over at Sony, but has worked for Warner Bros. in the past with Gangster Squad.

At one point they had Drive‘s Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn attached to star and direct the remake but the two would exit to focus on other projects instead.

They’ve had been plenty of different screenwriters previously involved scripting the Logan’s Run remake which included genre heavy-weights Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine, Dredd, Ex Machina, Never Let Me Go) and Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, The Wolverine, The Usual Suspects, Edge of Tomorrow, Jack Reacher). It’s hard to imagine that these guys couldn’t get a workable script together.

Artists Ed Natividad (Jupiter Ascending, Batman v Superman, Edge of Tomorrow, Robocop, Man of Steel, Cloud Atlas, Total Recall Remake, The Thing Remake, Amazing Spider-Man 2, Cowboys and Aliens, Speed Racer, I Am Legend, Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, The Phantom Menace, Attack of The Clones, Terminator 3, I, Robot) and Ben Procter (Avatar, Prometheus, Superman Returns, Matrix Reloaded, Matrix Revolutions, Transformers 1-4, Ender’s Game) developed some concept art for the version director Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, Tron Legacy, Tron 3) and screenwriter Timothy J. Sexton (Children of Men). This art includes some vehicle design, the look for the Sandmen who chase-down “runners” and the futuristic environments. This version would eventually go into limbo and Joseph would move-on to make Tron 3 for Disney instead.
