A.D. After Death #2
Image Comics

Story by: Scott Snyder
Art by: Jeff Lemire

Jonah Cooke is a thief. He is a very good thief, in his own estimation. The beginning of Part two of this story has him on the run and calling for help. As he is pursued through a strange and dangerous forest, he comes upon a cliff face where he must make a choice of whether or not to return what he has stolen or take a leap off the edge of a 500 foot drop through electrical clouds to what he is told is a “Dead World” below. Jonah has been in contact with the mysterious “Forager “down below and his curiosity about the world he came from but can no longer remember, forces him to try and establish and maintain contact. This leads him to taking some daring risks that might just alter the future for both societies.

What would you do? What would be the circumstances of either action in a world where a cure for death has been found?

Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire continue to play with and manipulate the medium in this latest volume which sees scenes shift from intense visual action to prose that gives the reader the sense that they are reading Jonah Cooke’s story in novel form. The long form style of the narrative is as unique as the water color style visuals. There are moments when one has to go back over some information because the transitions between the past and the present narratives are unclear, but the overall story is interesting and holds the attention.

A.D After Death #2 continues to be engaging, but is hampered by inconsistent transitions in the narrative. The visuals are very well done and the water color like color tones are refreshing. I just wish there were more of them.
