We’ll Likely See The Return of Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter In ‘Captain Marvel’

Aug 1, 2017

I think a lot of us were a little shocked and curious why Captain Marvel would be set in the 1990s.

Some reasons include giving us insight on the origins of Nick Fury, who will have both his eyes and we’ll most likely learn how his lost one. Another, is to see what SHIELD might have looked like before Fury became the director. This obviously leaves the door open for former brass to make a return and bringing back SHIELD without having to retcon killing it in The Winter Soldier or acknowledge Agents of SHIELD (sorry fans).

In Ant-Man, we saw a brief scene set in 1989 where Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) quits SHIELD in a room with Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. It’s most likely they were the ones running things at the time and as we’ve seen with Marvel possibly hinting at future films.

If Captain Marvel takes place after 1991, there’s a strong chance that Peggy Carter might be the only big-wig still roaming the halls as it’s leadership (as the director?). This gives Marvel Studios a very good reason to bring back Hayley Atwell using the similar aging digital technology they’ve previously used in Winter Soldier and Ant-Man.

Marvel Studios producer Louis D’Esposito recently posted images of Awtell and himself at the Marvel offices. Louis directed the Agent Carter short that led to the two seasons of her series on ABC.

Could something be in the works?

Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson are confirmed, but with the film in pre-production ahead of it’s January production start in Los Angeles they’ll likely need to start checking schedules for returners like Hayley. This could explain her very public visit. We’ve seen her reprise the role in The Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man, another return wouldn’t be terribly shocking due to the 90’s setting and SHIELD presence.

Captain Marvel shoots January-May of next year in California with a release date set for March 8th, 2019.
