Weta Digital Handling Visual Effects On Sony’s ‘Venom’

Sep 10, 2017

Yesterday, we revealed that due to crew hiring issues we’d see a delay on the production start of Sony’s Venom, moving from a start date of September 1st to October 23rd.

Well, Omega Underground has some reassuring news concerning the visual effects team that should ease fans worried about the production.

We have learned that Sony has hired Weta Digital‘s Brice Parker (Jurassic Park III, Matrix Reloaded, Matrix Revolutions, Furious 7) as film’s visual effects production manager on the film. This would be the first time the digital side of Weta will have worked on the Spider-Man franchise.

You can read Parker’s bio posted on the Weta Digital website above or click here.

Weta Digital’s impressive credits include The Lord of The Rings trilogy, Avatar, The Hobbit trilogy, Planet of The Apes trilogy, District 9, King Kong, Prometheus, and Valerian.

The company’s superhero credits (various levels of work from project to project) are equally as impressive which include X-Men: First Class, The Avengers, The Wolverine, Deadpool, Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2, Wonder Woman, Justice League, and Avengers: Infinity War.

It’s an excellent choice since the multiple symbiotes (Venom, Carnage, She-Venom/Scream?) in the film will be effects heavy and need a strong visual effects team to tackle them.

Weta Workshop did a lot of the design and prop-work for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. As messy as the film was I did like the work they put into the Green Goblin props.

They’ve also hired visual effects producer Mark Soper for the visual effects team, who recently worked with Weta on Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel for director Robert Rodriguez. His superhero credits include Captain America: The First Avenger and Iron Man 3.

Soper won’t be the only crew member with experience working within the Marvel Cinematic Universe hire for Venom. Sony previously hired Spider-Man: Homecoming production designer Oliver Scholl for the film.

Tom Hardy (Dunkirk, Mad Max: Fury Road, Inception) is currently the only official cast member on the Ruben Fleischer film, but Riz Ahmed (Rogue One, Nightcrawler) was reportedly being eyed for a role.

Venom has the release date of October 5th, 2018.
