There’s been a huge curiosity what Fox has planned next for their X-Men franchise. One project that’s been kicking-around for six-seven years is one people don’t really tend to talk about. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner first mentioned development on a New Mutants film in 2009, confirming it’s been pitched to the studio and I think people have just forgot this property was even on the table. They’re busy putting together new X-Men franchises with Deadpool, Gambit, and X-Force, but it’s likely already being setup in front of our eyes.
Shuler Donner revealed that she has been cooking up plans for several other mutant films. The two she named? An X4, reuniting the X-Men and a big screen outing for The New Mutants. X4, she said, had yet to be pitched to the studio, however.
This X4 reunion pitch she mentions very likely could have ended-up becoming Days of Future Past or very likely turned into The New Mutants movie. I don’t think a lot of people caught-on that Days of Future Past could have been setting-up New Mutants with members Sunspot, Warpath, Blink, and possibly even Bishop.
Jeff Wadlow’s X-Force is said it will take more cues from the more modern team and could leave a bunch of the original characters on the sidelines, since there will be five members in the film. Those characters could be placed into New Mutants since they were sort of interchanged between the two groups. It’s been sort of confirmed by Rob Liefield that Cable and Deadpool will take two spots, with hints from that Wadlow that Domino and Psylocke could be another two leaving one more spot to fill.
Wadlow has been specific that these characters aren’t even allowed to be in the mansion which could refer to Psylocke, Deadpool other members being hired killers. It’s hard to imagine that X-Force will become X-Men 4 but New Mutants on the other hand is a possibility.
The comic was created by Chris Claremont and the studio is looking to mine most his stories for their cinematic universe. Adapting Days of Future Past, Age of Apocalypse and have hired him to outline the Gambit film which is another character he created. Moving forward with a New Mutants film is a way Fox could keep the Claremont movies rolling within another time period.
We know that fans have been curious if X-Men 4 will be a possibility, seeing cast members already confirming they’ll be getting recast could mean that Fox might be aiming to do something a bit different than what fans are expecting within that cinematic timeline. Which could be altered even further once the dust settles with X-Men Apocalypse or once they announce their plans.
Who knows, characters like Cyclops and Jean Grey could be killed during the events of Apocalypse or it’s sequels which might setup a whole new future leaving the door open for New Mutants and X-Force to replace the present/future timelines for their own trilogies.
Let’s be honest, the biggest mistake Singer made was hiring virtually unknowns for major lead mutant roles in the original X-Men trilogy, with only a handful of them developing into accomplished actors. We could see a bunch more recasting or retooling of characters and I wouldn’t be shocked to see New Mutants actually replace what fans were expecting X-Men 4 to be, since I think fans like myself are dying to see a more mainstream X-Men film either set in the present or future but want new actors/characters to make things a bit more fresh. Allowing some of the original characters to return in supporting roles but creating a whole new generation of mutants to kick some ass in their own franchise.
I wouldn’t be upset if the only Cyclops or Jean Grey we see from now on are played by Tye Sheridan and Sophie Turner in the Singer films. My expectation we’ll see a more faithful Phoenix Saga eventually used for sequels using the younger versions of the heroes.
New Mutants could take-on a larger lineup which might allow characters like Shatterstar, Boom-Boom, Cannonball, Feral, Colossus’s sister Magik and Siryn to join the franchise. These could become the new students in the mansion which we saw at the end of Days of Future Past being taught by people like Wolverine and Kitty, combining some X-Force and New Mutant team members since they’ve have crossed-over in the comics.
They could easily have Cable and Domino becoming mentors of the film since they were apart of the leadership of both New Mutants and X-Force teams, also possibly taking the place of Cyclops and Jean Grey as teachers at the mansion since those characters will be given stronger exploration in the Singer films. The hope being that Singer will make a couple more films in past seeing those new characters development in sequels.
Producers and Liefield have been teasing development on feature film focusing on Cable for years. There’s still a chance he could be introduced in Apocalypse since he was created as a mutant that could defeat Apocalypse.
I’m not saying this definite, it’s what I’ve been hearing for a while and I feel like it’s a way for Fox to move forward without stars like Jennifer Lawrence, and others once their contracts are up after this trilogy ender. New Mutants could be a way to “relaunch” without having to make the major changes we saw with First Class. Personally, I think Fox should move away from brining back certain actors and keep trying to reinvent the series with new characters/actors.
The X-Men universe is massive and the quality has changed over the last fifteen years it needs to move beyond so-so C-level actors like Famke Janssen, Kesley Grammer, Shawn Ashmore and James Marsden in major roles. Seems odd they would go from acting standard from Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Nicolas Hoult then going back to these duds from X3 who made the franchise feel like a television series.
Recasting would be the best move which they might be already doing with Daniel Cudmore who plays Colossus.
Do you want to see The New Mutants movie giving fans a whole new crop of X-Men and should it replace X-Men 4?
