One of the biggest complaints I hear people give about mainstream comics is the lack of story. I am one of those people. While I do like a lot of the established characters that Marvel and DC have, sometimes I just want something different. That is when I go out searching the indie comic scene. These creators have more freedom to tell unique stories with different kinds of characters.
Take Shane White’s Braun for instance. This is an action comic set in the future about a sinister business and robots. While that may sound like another day at the park to most comic book fans, White takes you on an adventure like you have never seen before. We are dropped into a future that is not dystopian, but not exactly paradise. This main location is called Decca City and is governed by corporations known as Politicorps. Axiom Global is one of these corporations that “just wants the best for people.”
Our main characters, Maven, and her robot guardian, Braun, have to figure out what Axiom is up to. They hold secrets that will change the lives of Maven and of all humankind as they know it. Braun: Techtonic Shift is a fun and fast-paced read. I cleared all 175 pages of it in a weekend. Now I am going back through it just to enjoy the art more. The only thing I would have added is a brief character bio for some out the stars of the book. While it was nice learning about them as I went, a little something at the start to help keep names straight would have helped. I am a little ashamed to admit that I was referring to Maven by her mom’s name in my head more than once.
