This is sadly turning into a summer of endings for me. As I finished reading this issue of Jem, I realized that it is the penultimate issue! That means that Jem is almost over, at least for now. I have my ear to the ground about her future, but I have not heard anything yet. Kelly Thompson has plenty of other irons in the fire to keep us entertained, as does the rest of the crew, but Jem will always be special to me. If this is the last series we see her in for a while, I could not have asked for a better one. But on with my review!
In this issue, the Holograms and Misfits are reunited (and it feels so good?). The Misfits, as we saw in part 4, have seen the outside world and they want to change it. The Holograms have learned evil truths within the walls of Jemworld and have the same goals. Now these unlikely friends will have to team-up to defeat Jemcorp. With comics like this, the question is not if they can do it, but how will they. I have no doubt in my mind that the “good guys” will win, but the great thing about Kelly’s writing is that you never know how. Even in this issue there is a surprise that had me floored. Maybe those of you with keener eyes saw it coming, but I had to stare at the page to make sure I was not seeing things.
If you are looking for a series that is emotional, entertaining, and just plain fun, you need to check this out. And do not wait for the trade to comes out, start reading it now. (Then go and buy the trade as well.) I hate to see this run end, but I love to watch it go!
