Venom film still happening at Sony

Mar 4, 2016

It looks like Sony is continuing with a Venom Spin-off film after all and has hired Dante Harper (Edge of Tomorrow) to write a script for Venom. This Venom film is to be envisioned as its own franchise, completely separate from the upcoming Spider-Man Film starring Tom Holland.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the film.

Venom is one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes and it’s hard to see a film with Venom with no connection to Spider-Man. However, which carnation of Venom has yet to be determined. My guess is this version of Venom will be of government agent Flash Thompson aka Agent Venom. This version makes much more sense for a theatrical film, especially if Peter Parker is missing from the picture. Also many fans may not know this but Flash Thompson has now been Venom longer than Eddie Brock ever was and has become the definitive version in the comics.

The original incarnation of Venom, was Eddie Brock and he made his introduction into the comics back in 1988. Eddie Brock obtained the symbiote after Peter Parker forcibly ripped it off his own body. Eddie’s hatred for Spider-Man transformed him into the classic Sharp-toothed, long tongued villain we all love.
Venom was previously depicted in the Spider-Man 3 (2007) film and played by Topher Grace. However, that version of the character failed to do the symbiotic character any justice.
