iPad Gaming

Sep 25, 2010

I’m officially settled on what gaming currently is on the iPad. I’ve been playing several games over the past 3 months, including board games, Diablo knock offs, and FPSs. If anyone thinks an iPad or iPhone/Touch is a replacement product for the PSP or DS, they haven’t played any of the top 10% of games from those platforms.

Let me get this out of the way, I love my iPad. But I don’t see it as a meaningful platform for big budget, intense games. Rather, it is a great opportunity for board games, puzzles, and other casual categories. For example, my dog loves to eat. She begs and begs for food while my wife and I are eating or sitting on the kitchen table for any reason. So we can’t play Monopoly. That’s where the iPad acts as the ultimate circumvention tool. We’ve played countless hours of Monopoly on e device and actually prefer it to the physical board game.

Meanwhile, the low refresh rate for FPS N.O.V.A. drives me crazy. And controlling the protagonist in Dungeon Hunter is awkward. They are both great attempts that don’t work for me – but may for casual gamers. I’d like to your thoughts!
