Avengers director Joss Whedon will start work on the DCEU’s Batgirl next year according to DC’s Creative Officer Geoff Johns.
Speaking with IGN about the future of Batman and Batgirl in Warner Bros shared superhero universe John’s said:
“But for Batman what I will say is that Batman is more than just Batman and, you know, it’s been way too long since we’ve seen, you know, an expansion of that universe, and Batgirl – we are doing Batgirl with Joss Whedon, it’s going to be super exciting. He’s going to start that next year, and that’s just the start.”
Earlier this year it was announced Whedon would write and direct Batgirl. The 53 year-old filmmaker said in an interview with THR he was obsessed with the character:
“She came up, and I started getting obsessed with how a young woman could get hardcore enough to need to put on the cowl. Like, what’s her damage? She didn’t have her parents killed in an alley. Who is this person, who decides — rather than being forced to by their childhood trauma — decides to pick up this life?” he adds. “How intense and driven that person is… I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.”
With the project beginning next year, casting will soon be underway. Whedon previously commented that he wanted to develop the character before thinking of names of actress to cast in the role.
Lets keep our fingers crossed that Warner Bros announce more news about Batgirl during they’re Hall H panel at San Diego Comic Con later today.
