A while back it seemed that Antoine Fuqua had to choose between directing Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 2 or the second Scarface remake. Fuqua ended up making The Equalizer 2 while Scarface lumbered along and ultimately was placed into development limbo, possibly on purpose by Universal to keep Fuqua as an option.
Deadline now reports that without a director the Scarface project is now circling back to Fuqua for the gig and has started new talks with Universal to return. However, it sounds like Diego Luna will no longer be attached to star due to scheduling conflicts.
The original Scarface was released in 1932 and was based on real-life Italian immigrant turned notorious violent gangster kingpin Al Capone during the era of prohibition. The first remake was then reimagined in the 1980s by Brian De Palma and screenwriter Oliver Stone with the backdrop of the equally violent cocaine cartels of Miami, with Al Pacino‘s Cuban gangster taking the place of Capone.
Both films were inspired by the real events surrounding Chicago and Miami at the time.
This new version is said to center around the Mexican cartels and will be set in Los Angels.
Scarface is currently without release or production dates.
