Amazon Hires ‘Star Trek: Beyond’ and ‘Star Trek 4’ Screenwriters For ‘Lord of The Rings’ Series

Jul 29, 2018

Amazon has finally announced some writers for their upcoming Lords of The Rings series which is said to have a production budget of more than $1 billion after spending to $250 million just to secure the rights.

They’ve now added screenwriters JD Payne and Patrick McKay to write the show. Their credits include Jungle Cruise, Star Trek: Beyond, and Star Trek 4.

“The rich world that J.R.R. Tolkien created is filled with majesty and heart, wisdom and complexity,” longtime friends and writing partners Payne and McKay said in a joint statement. “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Amazon to bring it to life anew. We feel like Frodo, setting out from the Shire, with a great responsibility in our care — it is the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime.”

Not much is known about the show outside of it taking place between after The Hobbit but before Fellowship of The Ring. It makes sense details are unknown since they haven’t started writing it, despite online rumors suggesting otherwise.

I’ll have my fingers crossed they’ll focus on a group of Gondor rangers.

There is chatter that Weta Workshop could get involved, but it has yet to be confirmed.

Filming on the series could begin as soon as 2020 with an air date eyeing sometime in 2021. No word if they’ll be returning to New Zealand.
