Director Antoine Fuqua Confirms A Future Meeting With Marvel Studios – Could It Be About ‘Blade’?

Aug 11, 2018

While speaking with HeyUGuys, director Atonine Fuqua again mentioned that Sony had approached him to direct their Morbius movie (revealed back in April). He then went on to confirm that he’ll be meeting with Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige about an undisclosed project.

”I might have a meeting with Kevin soon. ”

Considering that it’s expected that Ryan Coogler is coming back for Black Panther 2, could this be for their new Blade movie?

In 2013, THR said that Marvel Studios had penned a treatment for a new Blade movie after the film rights reverted back to Marvel from New Line Cinema. This was taking place at the same time they were developing a treatment for Ms Marvel/Captain Marvel in-house.

Marvel has a writing program it uses as a concept generator and has scripts for Blade and Ms. Marvel features, for example. Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Black Panther and The Runaways are other projects on the horizon.

Here is what Feige had to say about Blade to JoBlo, just last year.

We think it would be cool. Someday. My tenure at Marvel started 17 years ago, and there were two things that sort of launched the modern era. One was X-Men, which was the first thing that people said, “Oh, there’s life here.” But a few years before that, there was Blade. A character nobody had heard of at all, had only appeared in a few issues of Tomb of Dracula or something, turned into a big franchise. That was always a great lesson for me, where you go, “It doesn’t matter how well known the character is, it matters how cool the movie is.” Which, many years later, would be the reason we do Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange. I think Blade is a legacy character now, and I think it would be fun to do something with him one day.’

Fuqua also mentioned recently at CinemaCon to JoBlo that he’d love to direct Blade.

“As a kid I grew up with comic books. They talked to me about BLACK PANTHER years ago, way back in the day. There’s some reason they came up and they talked to me about at Sony, a Marvel character, Morbius [The Living Vampire]…that kinda came up. I don’t know, I have a thirteen-year-old son so I’m watching more of that again and it’s exciting to do that. I’d love to create a new one. Y’know, something that’s closer to what I get excited about.”

Fuqua then turned the tables on me and asked me what I’d like to see him do. I had an answer ready, too. I told him I’d love to see him on a revival of BLADE. Fuqua seemed a little surprised in a good way, but he’s obviously juggling some upcoming projects.

“Blade, huh? Not Morbius? Not Scarface?” We had a good laugh, as Fuqua wanted to see which I preferred. Here’s our exchange on that:

FUQUA: Maybe I’ll get a chance to get lucky to do both. I’ll do Scarface and a superhero movie.

PAUL: Well, if they call you for Blade, man, take the call.

FUQUA: What about Morbius?

PAUL: Morbius would be interesting, but he’s not that popular, so you have a lot of freedom to really make him into something.

FUQUA: He could turn into Blade! (laughs).

Whatever the project is this won’t be happening anytime soon as Fuqua is set to direct Universal’s Scarface this October.
