Writer-director Shane Black has revealed during an interview with Fandango if someone was willing to pay the production costs for a sequel to The Nice Guys, he’s willing to make it and seemingly had ideas. The catch being that the first film didn’t do too well at the box office leaving very little room for the studio to ask for a sequel.
Here is what Black had to say when asked about his desire to tackle Nice Guys 2.
“In a heartbeat, if someone would pay for it,” Black told Fandango when asked whether he wants to make a follow-up to The Nice Guys.
“We had all kinds of ideas. The problem is it didn’t do that well at the box office. I imagine it will break even, which is not a formula for reacquiring two very expensive movie stars and proceeding with a sequel.”
“If someone decided that it were enough of a cult hit to justify that, I’d be on it.”
“The Nice Guys” takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.
Nothing suggests it will happen but you never know with smaller films getting picked up by streaming platforms, anything is possible.
