John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are set to write, direct, and produce ‘The Creeps’ for Universal. The duo made the pitch to the studio, and it will be a coming-of-age comedic horror.
Daley and Goldstein wrote the screenplays of ‘Horrible Bosses’ and ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.’ Then, the duo made their directorial debut in 2015, with the reboot of ‘Vacation,’ which they also wrote. They are also responsible for the story and first draft of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’ Last year, they directed and did uncredited rewrites on the acclaimed comedy ‘Game Night.’
Meanwhile, they are still set to direct the long-gestating DC solo film ‘The Flash.’ However, that is dependent on the situation involving star Ezra Miller. The script from Daley and Goldstein has a lighter take on the material, which led to creative differences between Miller and the the duo. Now, Miller is currently writing a new screenplay, with Grant Morrison (‘Happy!’), in an attempt to craft a darker tone for the film.
If Warner Bros. doesn’t approve Miller and Morrison’s script, Miller could leave, as his contract expires this May. On the flip side, if WB approves the script, Daley and Goldstein could end up leaving. At this point, it’s only a matter of time before things sort themselves out.
In short, if ‘The Flash’ doesn’t pan out, the duo have ‘The Creeps’ to fall back on.
Universal has not set a release date for the film yet.
