‘Shazam!’ Sequel in the Works with Writer Henry Gayden Returning; Director David F. Sandberg Expected to Return

Apr 9, 2019

Just after the opening weekend, the announcement was made that a sequel to ‘Shazam!’ is already in the works. Henry Gayden, the writer of the acclaimed first film, is returning to pen the screenplay.

Gayden previously wrote the film ‘Earth to Echo,’ and wrote the script for ‘The Last Human,’ a future project for directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

But that’s not all, as the first film’s director David F. Sandberg is also expected to return. Sandberg, as well as producer Peter Safran, have previously expressed their interest in coming back for more Captain Sparkle Fingers.

David F. Sandberg began his career with short films, which lead to one of them becoming a feature film: ‘Lights Out.’ Producer James Wan, who had a hand in bringing ‘Lights Out’ to life, then brought Sandberg into The Conjuring Universe to direct ‘Annabelle: Creation.’ Then, he made the move to another universe, the DCEU, with ‘Shazam!’ and very likely its sequel.

The cast of the first film comprises of Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Djimon Hounsou, Faithe Herman, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Marta Milans, and Cooper Andrews. Most of which will most likely return in the sequel.

Meanwhile, a ‘Black Adam’ solo movie is in development, with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson playing the titular character, a script by Adam Sztykiel (‘Due Date,’ ‘Rampage’), and a production start of March 2020. A director announcement should be imminent.

New Line Cinema has not yet set a release date for the ‘Shazam!’ sequel, but it could release as early as 2021.
