Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Nightmare Alley’ Now Has Bradley Cooper in Talks for Lead Role, Replacing Leonardo DiCaprio

Jun 14, 2019

Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Nightmare Alley’ now has Bradley Cooper in early talks for the lead role of Stan Carlisle. Leonardo DiCaprio (‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ ‘The Revenant’) passed on the project after a deal could not be reached.

Cooper recently got three Academy Award nominations for ‘A Star is Born,’ where he was the writer, director, and star. This year, he reprised his role of Rocket for Disney’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Next, he will be writing, directing, and starring in Paramount’s ‘Bernstein.’

Meanwhile, del Toro serves as director and co-writer, with Kim Morgan (‘The Forbidden Room’).

The most recent film from del Toro is ‘The Shape of Water,’ which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Another project in the works is Netflix’s ‘Pinocchio,’ which is currently in pre-production, releasing in 2021.

The premise of William Lindsay Gresham’s novel (of the same name) is below:

“A study of the lowest depths of showbiz and its sleazy inhabitants – the dark, shadowy world of a second rate carnival filled with hustlers, scheming grifters, and Machiavellian femmes fatales.”

Additionally, cinematographer Dan Laustsen (‘The Shape of Water,’ ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’) and production designer Tamara Deverell (‘The Strain,’ ‘Star Trek: Discovery’) are onboard.

Further, filming will begin September 30th and wrap January 28, 2020 in Toronto, Canada. More casting announcements will come soon.

Fox Searchlight has not set a release date as of now.
