Another one of the live-action ‘Star Wars’ projects is coming together, as the long-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries now has a writer and director. Deborah Chow will helm the series, with Hossein Amini writing.
Chow recently directed an episode of the Starz series ‘American Gods.’ Other one episode outings include USA’s ‘Mr. Robot,’ Netflix’s ‘Jessica Jones,’ AMC’s ‘Better Call Saul,’ and Amazon’s ‘The Man in the High Castle.’ Her first venture in the ‘Star Wars’ universe is next, with ‘The Mandalorian,’ premiering November 12th.
Amini is popular for writing the screenplay of Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Drive.’ He also co-writer on the Universal films ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ and ’47 Ronin.’ On the television side, he wrote several episodes of AMC’s ‘McMafia’ and TNT’s ‘The Alienist,’ serving as co-creator on the former.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also gave a statement:
“We really wanted to select a director who is able to explore both the quiet determination and rich mystique of Obi-Wan in a way that folds seamlessly into the ‘Star Wars’ saga. Based on her phenomenal work developing our characters in ‘The Mandalorian,’ I’m absolutely confident Deborah is the right director to tell this story.”
An Obi-Wan Kenobi film was in development back in 2017, with ‘Billy Elliot’s Stephen Daldry in talks to direct. Those plans fell through after the performance of 2018’s ‘Solo.’
Meanwhile, Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as the titular character. He portrayed Kenobi in the ‘Star Wars’ prequel trilogy. Those films comprised of ‘The Phantom Menace,’ ‘Attack of the Clones,’ and ‘Revenge of the Sith.’
Moreover, the upcoming series will take place eight years after the events of ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.’
Back in 2005, we last saw the character back on the desert planet Tatooine. Additionally, the show will be around nine years before Kenobi’s final encounter with Maul in ‘Star Wars: Rebels.’
However, there are no other plot details available as of now. The miniseries will comprise of either six or eight episodes.
Further, filming will take place in London next year.
There is no premiere date yet, but it likely release sometime in 2021, after the ‘Cassian Andor’ series.
