Josh Boone’s upcoming superhero horror feature “The New Mutants” has had anything but a smooth production so far. Originally scheduled for a release in April 2018, it has been hampered with consistent delays, and plans of extensive reshoots that never came to fold. It was starting to look like the film was finally going to see the light of day this April, but unforeseen circumstances had forced Disney/Fox to to re-date all of their films, which involved delaying New Mutants indefinitely.
This has led many to speculate that Disney/Fox will be opting to forgo a theatrical release entirely, and send the film straight to PVOD platforms instead; following in the foot-steps of Universal and Warner Bros. of releasing “Trolls: World Tour” and “Scoob!” in this format, respectively. A recent listing on both Amazon’s UK and US sites might have answered this question, as it already lists the film for pre-order.
While one could argue that this was a technical error from when the film was still scheduled to release in April, the $25.99 price-tag is higher than the $19.99 that Fox/Disney films often sell for on Digital HD. The price-tag is actually a lot closer to the $24.99 range that Warner Bros. is currently offering for “Scoob!” on pre-order PVOD. While this isn’t confirmation, it seems to be pointing in the direction, and with Disney expected to do their Q2 earnings call tomorrow we should be getting solid news sooner rather than later.
