Now that Thawne is in control of Barry Allen’s body, he is going to be the Flash Barry always should have been.
Eobard Thawne proceeds to take on the role of the Flash and his fellow villains don’t take the news too well. While they sit and wait for him to return, Flash pays a visit to Bart Allen and the young speedster begins to see that something is wrong with his grandfather.
When the new Rogues decide that they are tired of staying hidden, Flash intervenes to put them down quickly before giving them their next assignment and making his way to where Iris is in hiding. Unfortunately, he’s going to find that being Barry Allen is harder than he thought. Especially when the real Barry starts getting some unexpected help in the Speed Force.
This was a lot more entertaining than I expected. A lot of the current Flash stories have felt derivative and there are those elements in this story as well, but Williamson does a great job of acknowledging that in an interesting way and moving past it to something that is engaging to read. I like the fact that the story doesn’t drag the possession plot line for too long. I like that Williamson makes the characters smart and gives Iris agency instead of making her either a pawn or a passenger. I even liked the end a lot with the surprise appearances and what they can mean going forward.
Sandoval and Kolins do excellent work with the art throughout. The Speed Force scenes are a little weak visually, but the rest of the issue is stunning. The last page of the issue if fantastic and composed brilliantly.
