John Constantine: Hellblazer #9
DC Comics
Written by: Simon Spurrier
Art by: Matias Bergara
Colors by: Jordie Bellarie
Letters by: Aditya Bidikar
It really is unfortunate Simon Spurrier’s run with John Constantine: Hellblazer has been limited to 12 issues. John Constantine: Hellblazer #9 is another reminder that this series deserves an extension.
Spurrier does a great job of telling short stories in a few issues or even just one, like with John Constantine: Hellblazer #9. Rather than try to stretch the story over six issues, Spurrier provides the perfect amount of detail in each issue, while utilizing an unpredictable, enticing character.
Each story feels like a check-in on Constantine. He could be anywhere in the world, dealing with anyone or anything. We just happen to stumble upon him at a particular moment.
It’s another instance where a reader who’s not up to date on Spurrier’s John Constantine: Hellblazer run could just pick up this book and enjoy the story, so Lon as they’re familiar with the character.
(WARNING: Spoilers for John Constantine: Hellblazer #9 ahead.)
Spurrier’s allusion to one of the major political issues in Britain was brilliant. And even if a reader isn’t aware of what’s gone on with the Royal Family, they can still understand this particular issue in the story.
Spurrier also finds a good way to tie it all in with the story’s resolution.
DC has also done a great job with the mix of artists on this run. Matias Bergara’s work flows great with the tone of the story and Jordie Bellaire’s colors — who’s also been an outstanding constant throughout the John Constantine: Hellblazer run. Bellaire’s work is crucial when it comes to setting the tone for each issue.
