The Penguin is set to make his big screen return in Matt Reeve’s ‘The Batman,’ although this maybe a more grounded version than previous incarnations, it’s always fun to see the fowl themed villain grace this fan’s eyes. So I got the chills when a new Penguin figure from Diamond Select crossed my desk. This latest version from Diamond appears to be a colorful mixture of Penguins’ past and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
To quote Catwoman, this Penguin is Purrrrfect. It’s really an amazing piece that offers everything you could ask for in a Penguin figure. The figure, the clothes, the umbrella, the sidekick, it’s all spot on and brings everything we love about the character to the forefront. This figure is unmistakable even in silhouette, as our portly villain dawns his signature top hot, cold weather coat and battle ready umbrella. Top to bottom I can’t find a single thing I don’t like about this statue, the face is immediately recognizable although I can’t pin point it on a single incarnation, the clothes seem to be taken from a mish mash of comics and on screen appearances, while his signature umbrella draws the focus piercing a familiar batarang and an even more familiar friend stands ideally by.
The details on this figure are sparse, but its made up with a fantastic paint job and attention grabbing accessories. Most notable has to be our little penguin friend from ‘Batman Returns.’ With a rocket strapped to his back and his helmet snug tight to his head, this little guys is as dangerous as he is adorable and other piece of this perfect Penguin puzzle. And that pretty much what sums up what’s great about this statue its a bunch of perfectly placed pieces from various aspects of Penguins visual history that come together to create a statue that is both unique and familiar.
