Impressions: G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout on Switch

Oct 20, 2020

The fourth mission of G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout features Sci Fi and Lady Jane as they sprint through the snow in search of a key Cobra asset. It’s at this point where I have decided to pause and provide my initial impressions.

There is so much opportunity for Operation Blackout to be a strong third-person shooter. While I will complete the game before writing a final review, I am confident the gameplay will not improve. You see, it is a third person shooter without a cover system. But gun accuracy and enemy movement is so disconnected that a cover system is required for the game to be more fun – in my humble opinion.

What is fun is the sincere attention to character-detail by developers Iguanabee and Fair Play Labs. The heroes and villains looks exactly as I expected. I expect any fan of the classic cartoon series’ will immediately fall in love with the game. Even with the gameplay challenge mentioned above, I am compelled to continue playing so I can see the next mission and the new characters. There are also collectibles, which lead to alternate character skins.

More to come. For now, Operation Blackout is an easy recommendation for fans of the cartoon. Although, I would suggest getting it on PS4 or Xbox One instead of Switch. Without a cover system, controlling the game with the Joy-Cons is a serious challenge. Definitely do not try it on the Switch Lite. I started there and moved to my OG Switch. Next I will try to play it docked with my Pro Controller.
