Intrigue, suspense and revenge continue to be primary themes in James Tynion’s The Joker. While focus remains on James Gordon, The Joker #2 does a great job of giving us just enough of the title character to reinforce his powerful, menacing presence.
What makes Joker such a great story is Tynion has created so many issues in such a short period of time — all of which would make for a great arc on their own. While there are many threads introduced in this issue, The Joker #2 never once feels convuluted or complicated.
Gordan’s battle with his conscience has been the most compelling so far. Should he strive to be the moral leader he hopes to be, or does he need to do what’s best for not just his family, but also the rest of the world. The ever-present Caped Crusader and his ideas of justice are also weighing on Det. Gordon, as well as a reveal made in The Joker #2 that was both unexpected and eye-popping.
While still on the run following his recent attack on Arkham Asylum, the consequences continue to loom large for Joker. Not only does the mysterious woman who hired Gordon want to see Joker punished, but we also learn – more people care about those who died in Arkham than we might have initially expected. Now with several targets on his back, it will be fascinating to see how Joker is able to stay out of their crosshairs.
I never expected Det. Gordon could be the co-lead of such a captivating book, but here we are — and frankly, I can’t get enough.
In addition to The Joker #2, we get Punchline Chapter 2 written by Sam Johns and James Tynion IV, with art from Mirka Andolfo, colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr. and letters by Ariana Maher. Punchline is a very engaging story. While we only get images of the title character, this issue gives readers just a little more background on the terrifying — yet beloved — title character, creating for a nice slow build as we await her inevitable ongoing series.
