It needs to be acknowledged any time someone is both the writer and penciler on a title. Joëlle Jones had the same roles while working on Yara Flor’s story for Future State: Wonder Woman, and she did enough in that limited window to earn this opportunity.
Now, that story had me interested in the character, but I wasn’t exactly blown away. Of course, Future State: Wonder Woman did come with high expectations because of the importance of the second half of the title, along with Jones’ sharp art. I was interested in learning more about Yara Flor, but not all-in.
Well, that has changed after reading Wonder Girl #1. I’m all-in. Hard to imagine anyone wouldn’t be all-in after reading the first issue.
Those who read Future State: Wonder Woman, you already know Yara Flor has a naive confidence. It gives her a bit of an edge. If you didn’t read the Future State title, now you know.
But Yara is at a different place in her life in Wonder Girl #1, and it looks like she’s in for something big. This is where Jones’ has done such a good job. Readers already have an idea about Yara’s personality, so Jones spent Wonder Girl #1 developing what appears to be an epic issue surrounding the title character — who is completely unaware.
Also, looks like we’re going to see some familiar faces this series. It just appears to be a matter of how many.
Even with Tom Taylor continuing his Nightwing domination (#80 dropped this week), Wonder Girl #1 was my favorite DC Comics book released this week.
