Something Is Killing The Children continues to be one of the most consistent and well-written ongoing comics. Even without much action, Tynion always finds a way to create page-turning suspense.
Typically, “bridge” issues can feel tedious and fall flat. Something Is Killing The Children #17 gives us anything but. Where this issue succeeds best is with its character development, as well as the anticipation build-up.
While there are interesting nuggets of information about the mysterious organization known as the Order of St. George, this story is and will always be about Erica Slaughter. Not only are we shown more details about the horrifying final moments Erica spent with her family, we’re also given ominous details about what awaits her.
James Tynion’s interplay of past and future events set the stage for an awesome reckoning. Even with what little detail is provided about her upcoming initiation and what we saw happen to her family, I’m not sure what will be worse.

Once again, Werther Dell’Edera’s art is outstanding. While Tynion can create suspense with his narration and brilliant storytelling, Dell’Edera’s ability to evoke emotion and suspense through his art is next level. With most characters wearing masks, it’s remarkable how Dell’Edera can elicit such strong emotions solely through the characters’ eyes. Whether it is fear, anger or sadness, the art resonates off the page and becomes tangible.
So far, Tynion’s decision to go back to where it all started has proven to be an excellent idea. Only two issues into the newest arc, and I’m already eagerly awaiting the next issue. While we may know the outcome of Erica’s trials, it’s the journey of going from scared child to badass monster hunter that has me the most intrigued.
