King of Spies #3 marks three in a row for Image, with Crossover #11 and Saga #55 receiving comic of the week honors in the two weeks prior. BOOM! Studios’ Seven Secrets #14 was right there after building off an amazing start to the title’s third arc.

Before getting into the story, both Matteo Scalera’s main cover and Ozgur Yildirim’s variant cover are amazing. I liked Scalera’s main covers for the first two issues, but these two for King of Spies #3 are the best of the series. The idea of Itzy and Idris is such a wild concept. Seeing them ready for action — and taking action in this issue — is outstanding. And Millar picks the perfect spot for Scalera to insert the duo.
But there’s a lot more to King of Spies #3 than Itzy and Idris. Although, their involvement does pose Roland King with an important question. Have to imagine that’ll have a heavy influence on what transpires in the series’ final issue. (Speaking of which, Itzy and Idris spin-off please? Lots of possibilities there!)
Now, this story has been awesome from the start. I will say the second issue wasn’t quite as good as the opener and this week’s, but it was still very good. One of the things that separates this from other “past-your-prime badass stories” is tempo. We still get King’s monologue mixed in throughout the story, but Scalera’s art keeps things moving. Instead of hitting readers over the head with so much reflection, Millar provides just enough, leaving room for imagination.
All of this has set up for plenty of excitement going into the final issue of this outstanding miniseries.
