Review
We pick up right where we left off in the second issue. Franny continues to care for David, who has undergone a startling transformation into something more bug than man. Yet, this transformation doesn’t seem to faze the young, optimistic girl who has finally found a companion. The pursuit for David appears to have escalated, introducing us to a couple of new characters.
This issue doesn’t burst off the page, asking for your immediate attention. Instead, it takes you on a slow journey into madness. Lemire is methodically unfolding this story, and it feels like the right approach. The “scary” element in this book is hard to define. On the surface, it’s a heartwarming story about a girl who’s been mistreated and isolated, finding an unlikely friend in a monster. It almost carries the essence of a potential Disney project. However, there’s a sense of unease that can be found on every page. You’re constantly gripped by the notion something is about to go terribly wrong. There’s an indescribable presence, eerie and unsettling, making it genuinely spine-chilling.
Final Thought
Fishflies delivers a captivating read, presenting a beautiful story with a surprising twist. While the second installment may not quite match the impact of the opener, it certainly drives the story forward. We witness the evolution of the friendship between Franny and David, receiving morsels of information but never quite enough. I believe that when chaos eventually erupts (and it undoubtedly will), we’ll be in for an unforgettable experience – whether surreal or deeply emotional, it’s bound to be a jolt to the system.
