It’s October and that means Halloween is almost here. In honor of my favorite holiday of the year I give to you my top thirty horror movies. Now some of these films might be on every list, but some might not. I might even have a film or two that you have never heard of. Just remember this is my top thirty. In other words these films made me cringe or just sent chills up my spine. So with no further ado here is my list.
# 7
Evil Dead (1981)
Directed By: Sam Raimi
Evil Dead is where the Ash (Bruce Campbell) legend started. Evil Dead is probably the biggest cult film in the horror genre. What started as a very low budget film has turned into a huge success for Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi. Creating a couple of sequels and also now has a television show that debuts on Halloween called “Ash vs. Evil Dead” on the Starz network.
Five college kids head to a cabin in the woods for spring break. Of course a week away from school means one long mind inducing party. Not if the cabin has a say in it. One of the guests wonders off into the forest and returns later not quite like her normal self. Ash then discovers a basement is hidden underneath the cabin. In this basement they find a book and a tape recorder. Now this is not any normal book. This is the book of the dead. On the tape recording is a bizarre evil spell. When played which of course the kids do, they awaken the evil spirits within the forest. The spirits will not rest till everyone is dead. What ensues is one hell of a ride for these kids and of course you, the viewer.
I saw this movie as a teenager and remember renting it from the store. It has always been one of my favorite films along with the sequels. There are some very disturbing scenes within this film. One for example is a girl being raped by a tree. I’m looking forward to continuing the Ash story line with the new television show. This movie will teach you to stay away from strange books.
