We knew this was happening, right?
Mojang began this week by announcing that Minecraft: Wii U Edition will be available for purchase December 17th. It leaked a while ago that this title would be coming to the Wii U, but even if the announcement isn’t a surprise, the implications of a Minecraft game on the Wii U offer some exciting possibilities.
On it’s website, Mojang layed out some of the details for this title’s impending release:
Minecraft is launching on Nintendo’s Wii U console on December 17th. It’ll cost $29:99 or equivalent, will be available to download on the eShop, and comes bundled with six of our most popular add-on packs. There’s even a Festive mash-up included just in time for the holidays.
In that announcement, it also is hinted that some Nintendo-themed content packs will be coming in the near future. We can also expect to see off-TV play on the Wii U Gamepad. While Mojang detailed a great deal of the Wii U Edition, it also said that some more details will be shared closer to its release – so, basically within in the next week.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Since its purchase of Mojang in 2014, Microsoft has not impeded upon the developer’s desire to take this title to other competing platforms. Granted, while the Wii U is “competition” it’s not exactly a threat to the Xbox One. Still, it’s interesting to see in this industry.
Also, considering the demographic that Nintendo has traditionally catered to, this port seems like a no-brainer. Let’s hope that this Mojang takes advantage of the Wii U hardware’s gameplay capabilities and offers something truly unique and fresh for Minecraft players. Considering the creativity we’ve seen in Mario Maker, our YouTube, Twitch, and Twitter feeds ought to be full of Nintendo gamers’ take on this phenomenon.
