Harley Quinn and Her Gang of Harleys #1
DC Comics

If you haven’t already, it’s time to prepare yourself for Harley Quinn overload. DC Comics knows when it has a hot property, and it seems to have struck gold with the Joker’s favorite gal pal. Harley Quinn is about to hit the pop culture stratosphere with her upcoming big screen debut, but DC is wasting no time giving us all the Harley we can handle in Jimmy Palmiotti and Frank Tieri’s Harley Quinn and Her Gang of Harleys #1.
Just as the title suggests, Harley Quinn has acquired her own gang of Harley acolytes to help in her fight to save Coney Island from would-be criminals, oppressors, and hipsters. When Harley attempts to put her new team to the test, she leaves the door open for some team bonding and a little sin. Jimmy Palmiotti and Frank Tieri present a fun, lighthearted, and entertaining setup with a diverse cast of Harley Quinn wannabes (although they don’t like being called that). This comic’s biggest hurdle to overcome will be its ability to be diverse enough to not over-saturate the audience with Harley Quinn and her signature motif. While Palmiotti and Tieri do give us an excellent setup for the team, I couldn’t help but already feel a bit Harley Quinned out by the end.
It’s hard not to love HQ and her gang, and its even harder with Mauricet and Hi-Fi behind her. Mauricet’s pencils are cartoonish, fun, and sexy. In fact, my only real complaint with the art is that it’s a little too sexy at times. Our characters are such a diverse cast when it comes to their personalities, but their body types speak the same old story, as big hair and bodacious curves are everywhere. As a man, I highly enjoyed the images of Mauricet, but as a father, it’s difficult for me to share a comic like this with my daughter. Although I can’t commend them for progressiveness, Mauricet and Hi-Fi do give us some fun and colorful images that feel right at home in Harley’s world.
Harley Quinn and Her Gang of Harleys #1 may spell the beginning of the pop culture onslaught Harley is about to unleash, but that doesn’t make it any less fun or enjoyable. If you can’t get enough of the Clown Princess of DC, this comic was made for you.
