It looks like Warner Bros./DC has finally decided to join the 21st century in their film universe, apparently the studio is planning a Harley Quinn led female ensemble film starring and produced by Margot Robbie. While details are sealed tight by WB at the point, rumors are that in addition to Harley, we could also see Batgirl and the Birds of Prey in this film. Whether or not Jena Malone would reprise her role as Barbara Gordon from the deleted Batman V. Superman scenes or any potential release date for the film are unknown at this time.
I am sure that like many of you when you read the words Harley Quinn DC female ensemble film your first thought was they have to do Poison Ivy. Over the past 20 years Ivy and Harley have been one of the most interesting female duos in the DC universe ever since their friendship was introduced to us by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm in Batman the animated series. Spinning out of that, the couple have been the focus of dozens of entertaining comics combing the looniness of Harley and the maniacal mind of Ivy. At points, it has even been implied that the two may even be more than friends, if DC explored that side of their relationship it could make for an interesting and progressive sub plot within the film. As far as what other female villains we could see, Catwoman obviously immediately comes to mind. She, of course, could be used as hero, villain or double agent out for self gain but everything is just speculation at this point.
The potential introduction of a Batgirl led Birds of Prey team to combat the the DC female villains is such a fresh and interesting take within the superhero film genre. You could potentially have a film with no males central to the plot that see’s the bad ass gals of the DC universe not only duking it out over the course of the film but matching intellect as well. Anyone who has read these strong female characters in the comics know’s that neither Batman nor the Joker’s presence in necessary to make their stories viable and interesting.
