Yet another one of DC’s new titles amidst the Rebirth relaunch features the teaming up of Batgirl and Black Canary as they begin to track down a figure from Barbara’s past. This issue comes to really rely on the history of Batgirl and how she came to be and where she is now. It highlights key moments such as the story of ‘The Killing Joke’ and her time spent as the Oracle. So, it does well to get you up to pace with Barbara as she begins another mission to track down her target, but she has by her side Black Canary to help out as they team up once again.
I enjoy the majority of the comics relating to the Batfamily and this title was no exception. I found the dynamic personalities of Batgirl and Black Canary working well together as they tackle mobsters and hunt down their lead. However, this issue also does well to introduce another character whose path violently intersects with that of the duo.
The creative team behind this issue did, in my opinion, a superb job. While this issue does take time to set up Barbara’s legacy, it is by no means lacking in action and plot development. It’s not a title that feels too gritty or dark but does well to keep in mind an upbeat Batgirl working alongside the more abrasive Black Canary. Everything feels right with this comic so far as the writing and art mesh really well together. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this title but I’m glad to say that I both thoroughly enjoyed it and am already looking forward to the next installment!
