Confirmed by USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter and others, there is a new wizard joining the world of Harry Potter.
Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has been announced to co-star in the sequel to the Harry Potter prequel/spinoff film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. This is not only exciting news for both Potter and Pirates fans alike, but also starts the gears of speculation turning as to who the A-List actor could be portraying. Rumors are already abound that his character will make his first appearance in a cameo in the first film due out November 18 and everyone is asking: Who does he play?
The film finds Magizoologist Newt Scamander, played by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, traveling to the U.S. in the 1920’s to seek the Magical Congress of the United States. After his bag, containing an ever-expanding menagerie of magical creatures is compromised, he must use his powers and his allies to wrangle the creatures back while uncovering the conspiracy behind their escape.
With Johnny Depp’s role shrouded in secrecy, the smart money is on him playing the character of Gellert Grindewald, one of the most dangerous Dark Wizards of all time. Could Depp’s Grindewald be releasing Scamander’s magical beasts in order to end the International Statute of Secrecy that prevents the use of magic in the presence of Muggles? A goal Grindewald convinced Dumbledore was worth pursuing in the books. Could Depp be playing an original character that has yet to be introduced in Potter-lore? Like many of you, I will be in my seat on November 18th to find out.
