Universal’s reboot of The Mummy franchise is set to hit theaters June 9, 2017. It is set to be the first film in a proposed Universal Monsters shared universe of films. Today, we are one step closer to that being a reality.
Universal went live on their new website darkuniverse.com. The site has one image on it and that is of the members of what looks like the Universal Monster version of Marvel’s The Avengers.
The picture includes Russell Crowe (Gladiator) as Doctor Henry Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. Seated in front of him is Javier Bardem (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) as Frankenstein’s Monster, Tom Cruise reprising his Mummy role as Nick Morton, Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) as The Invisible Man and Sofia Boutella (Star Trek: Beyond) as The Mummy.
Apparently Jekyll’s multinational corporation will be the link between all of these films and he will use those connections to bring together this group of monsters for an unknown purpose. Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast) has signed on to direct the next film in the series Bride of Frankenstein will be released February 14, 2019. To celebrate the news, Universal also debuted a new logo sequence that will appear at the beginning of each film with a new score by Danny Elfman (Batman). Check it out.
Other films either rumored or in pre-production are Dracula, The Wolfman and Creature from the Black Lagoon, being written by Aquaman screenwriter Will Beall.
