Star War: Darth Maul Son of Dathomir #1

Art by: Juan Firgeri and Wes Dzioba
One of the best things to come from the Star Wars prequels was the brief appearance of a double light saber wielding sith lord named Darth Maul. It had a Boba Fett effect making Maul one the most memorable characters with the highest of cool factors. If you didn’t get enough of Maul you’re in luck because Dark Horse Comics is releasing Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir #1 this Wednesday. An exciting adventure that will have you rooting for the bad guy.
The series is based on the season 6 unaired episodes of The Clone Wars television series and it pits Darth Maul against Count Dooku. The story begins with Maul being held captive and interrogated by Dooku while an elaborate rescue mission is underway by his faithful followers. Jeremy Barlow does a great job of providing concise exposition with absorbing action. He adds some new dimensions to Maul that add to his mystique making him more of a sympathetic figure with a warrior’s heart. It’s quite the achievement considering how Maul eventually meets his fate.
Juan Frigeri provides some detailed pencilling especially in that iconic scowl of Maul but the colors from Wes Dzioba really gives the book a vibrancy and pop that lends itself well during the battle scenes. This was a pleasant surprise and a worthy addition to the comic book legacy of Star Wars. The book is easy to settle into and get hooked right away.
