Scott Free can’t sleep. In the midst of his insomnia, he recounts a story to Barda as Orion comes upon Granny Goodness and proceeds to decapitate her with Scott watching. Scott remembers this as he tries to purge it and the story from his memory. The feeling that Scott is somehow disassociated with the world around him continues as he sits down on the sofa in his home and is greeted by Forager. The bug explains to him the rising death toll among his people for Orion’s war and as he pleads for help from Scott, Lightray booms in to dispense punishment to Forager for treason.
Scott asks Lightray if the stories are true about Orion’s brutality and the New God warns Scott about being stupid. The next day Scott goes back to performing and is informed by Barda that they are being recalled by Orion in order to launch an invasion of Apokalips. After their return, Scott tries to talk to Orion. He tells him that there is something wrong and Orion attacks him. As Scott begins to fall unconscious, the feeling that something isn’t right continues for both Mister Miracle and the reader.
Mister Miracle continues to be a deep read for me. There are so many layers to the story and the deeper you dive into the narrative, the more invested you are in Scott and his struggle. King’s writing is amazing. He managed to weave in mystery and paranoia from all the characters and even the lighter moments in the story seem to portend to something more significant. Gaerads artwork is haunting. There are moments that go from crystal clarity to distortion that make the reader feel as uneasy as Scott does.
