Invincible is nearing its end and now Mark Grayson has taken position as the emperor of the Viltrumites. So much has happened with the fight against Thragg finally over and with so many viltrumite children he has left. Mark has taken it upon himself to lead his people into hopefully a brighter future. I’m glad to see Mark as restless as he is. On top of having to figure out where their place is in the universe, he also has to figure out how to handle finding out he is a father to another child. The conversation Mark and his mother have at the beginning at his fathers grave is very sweet as we reminisce about how simpler everything was from before he even got his powers.
I was a bit bummed to see that his father Nolan did not get a funeral scene. It didn’t have to be some big ceremony, but recognition among his people on how far he has come would’ve been nice to see. Even later when Mark is speaking with Allen the alien, their relationship is still rough. This though shows how much they have grown in their lives as they respect each other, I wish their friendship is in a better place, and recognize that what they are doing is always going to come to making difficult decisions. Every time Invincible comes to situations that are very big, it never makes the whole situation simple to answer. Sometimes things just won’t go the way you hope.
I was wondering if Mark was finally going to talk to his son and when he finally does, he causes him to faint. That little bit of humor was nice after seeing so much damage being caused by the little boy who has no idea why his body is so strong. One consistent thing about Mark is how quick he is to come to a decision on things. This has always been a great trait and even a fault on him at times. I feel like he needed something to push him into making a decision about the Viltrumites and probably feel like they’re just too big for Earth. I agree with him wanting to take them to either a different planet to coexist on or even find a planet to make their own. Hopefully, in the next issue, we will see if everyone will be going.
With many ends being tied up and setting up a farewell for Mark and Eve. Invincible brings many sweet moments and still some of that fun poking at superhero antics that we’ve come to love from this comic.
