Developed by Laser Guided Games, Golem Gates is an RTS (real-time strategy) meets CCG (Collectible Card Game), currently available on Steam as an early access title. The collectible cards are called “glyphs” and represent your offense, defense and special powers (i.e. fireball). The more you play, the more cards you earn which allow you to have a more dynamic battle. Your resource builds over time and allows you to play your cards. The strategy is playing the best card you can while weighing offense and defense against your available resource pool. This streamlines the resource gathering process found in RTS games. Of course, it’s not that simple, but it should help you see the correlation to the traditional RTS. Instead of using resources to farm for wood and gold, you have a single resource pool (which is the color gold….). The use of the traditional fog of war is more apparent in Golem Gates. Part of your strategy will be to control the fog of war both offensively and defensively.
There is a campaign but the real excitement, for me, is the online battles. I haven’t dared attempt one yet as I want to play more of the campaign and gather great cards for my deck.
Another aspect of Golem Gates that I dig is the art style. It’s reminds me of Dark Souls. Check out these screen shots!
Golem Gates is planned for a March 28th full release (version 1.0).
