Not to completely bury the lead, but one of the industries best writers Scott Snyder is taking over Justice League with a new creative tam and this new League has some familiar faces on the roster.
DC Comics announced that the relaunch of the Justice League comic book series will have a new creative team with acclaimed writer Scott Snyder (Dark Nights: Metal) being joined by amazing artists Jim Cheung (Infinity) and Jorge Jiminez (Super Sons). The new series will debut in June after Snyder’s Justice League: No Justice comes out and there are some definite changes in this new team. It looks like Green Lanterns Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz are off the roster. Hopefully, they are with the rest of the corps in space getting some much-needed training.
There also seem to be some additions made to this new iteration of the Justice League that gives them a familiar feel. The new roster consists of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman and now Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl and Green Lantern John Stewart. For anyone unfamiliar with this roster, with the exception of Cyborg and Aquaman, this was the lineup of the popular and critically acclaimed animated Justice League series from 2001.
Artist Jim Cheung talked about the experience of joining this new team, stating, “I am extremely honored, and happy, to be able to launch JUSTICE LEAGUE with Scott and Jorge,” he said. “It has been many years since I’ve had the pleasure of working at DC, but when Scott first mentioned this opportunity, I knew I couldn’t say no. His energy and excitement has been infectious, and I can’t wait to share what we have in store! I can’t think of a more perfect book to return to DC on! These characters are ones that I grew up loving, and the prospect of being able to leave my mark on them, leaves me thrilled.”
Jimenez chimed in with his enthusiastic take on this new book. “Working on JUSTICE LEAGUE is probably the most exciting opportunity I’ve ever had in my career,” says Jiménez. “I feel more than ever that this is my moment! I have in my hands a script written by the incredible Scott Snyder starring most important DC characters–Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman! Even better, I have the hyper-mega-talented Jim Cheung beside me! I can’t ask for more!”
Not to be outdone, Scott Snyder took the time to talk about this new opportunity. “Justice League has been the golden ring for me since I came to DC,” says Snyder. “The story I have planned is something I’ve been building towards through DARK NIGHTS: METAL and I can’t wait to tell it in the biggest way possible. And to have mega star Jim Cheung as one partner, and rising superstar Jorge Jimenez as my other partner, I’m just thrilled to get to work!”
In this new Justice League series, Martian Manhunter (who has been missing for the majority of DC Rebirth) is struggling to protect the team from an incoming threat that looks to destroy the world as they know it. In the meantime, a familiar face begins a dark path. No word on how the new team is formed, but I can’t wait for Justice League #1 to arrive on June 6th so I can find out.
