Amazon is already developing shows based on The Lord of The Rings and Conan The Barbarian, now there is word from Deadline they’re taking another step towards cornering the fantasy television market with an adaption of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time.
Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the ‘Aes Sedai’ as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.
It’ll be interesting to see how the series fits snugly next to Rings and Conan, as I’m not terribly familiar with the source material.
Rafe Judkins (Agents of SHIELD, Chuck) will act as the series showrunner.
Sony had been developing a feature film version and will still be participating in it’s development/production via Sony Pictures Television.
